De laatste scholar die ik in de serie “Was de
naturalist en rationalist Spinoza tegelijk ook een mysticus?” wil behandelen, wil
ik graag in een apart blog introduceren, zodat ik in dat blog zelf alle
aandacht kan geven aan de inhoud.
The International Encyclopedia of Ethics schrijft over Michael
Eldridge (Late of University of North Carolina-Charlotte): “Michael Eldridge
taught philosophy for many years at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
He was Treasurer of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy for
many years. He authored Transforming Experience: John Dewey's Cultural
Instrumentalism (Vanderbilt University Press, 1998), and numerous essays on
Dewey specifically, and pragmatism more generally. The Society for the
Advancement of American Philosophy (SAAP) have established a Michael Eldridge
Memorial Fund. In accord with the wishes of his family and in the spirit of
Mike's work, the fund will be for graduate student travel to SAAP and other
relevant conferences related to Mike’s work on Dewey, especially Dewey’s social
and political philosophy and his ethics. [Cf.]
The Continuum Companion to Pragmatism (2011), geredigeerd door Sami
Pihlström, werd opgedragen “To the memory of Michael Eldridge.” [Cf.]
Uit dit soort gegevens en nog veel meer, blijkt wel dat Michael Eldridge een
grootheid was in de wereld van het pragmatisme. Op de website van
de Humanwissenschaftliche Fakultät Universität zu Köln, zijn een aantal korte
video's met interviewtjes met hem geplaatst (een still eruit nam ik als zijn
portret).
