Britse filosoof en schrijver, geboren te Mordington in Scotland, volgde z’n opleiding aan de University of Edinburgh. Van 1876 tot 1902 was hij professor in de moraalfilosofie aan de University of St. Andrews. Van 1880–90 redigeerde hij en schreef sommige delen van de reeks Philosophical Classics for English Readers (15 delen). Vooral bekend werd hij door zijn werk aan Wordsworth. De editie Wordsworth's Works and Life (1881–89) die hij bezorgde omvat 11 delen. 
Hij gaf ook uit, en dat vormt uiteraard de aanleiding voor dit blog, Spinoza: four essays (1882). Het staat gedigitaliseerd voor ons klaar op archive.org. Het bevat de volgende in het Engels vertaalde teksten:

Die toespraak, die niet was bij de onthulling (die kwam in 1880), maar bij de 200e sterfdag bij het leggen van een steen op de plaats waar t.z.t. het standbeeld zou komen, eindigde met de beroemde woorden: “It is from hence perhaps that God has been seen most near!" Hij zei het uiteraard in 't Frans: "c'est d'ici peut-être que Dieu a été vu de plus près".
