Graag wijs ik op een interessante
tekst waarin Joe Hughes de vraag aan de orde stelt hoe het kon dat na
de demonisering van Spinoza door de Cambridge Platonists aan het eind
van de 17e, begin 18e eeuw in de 1850-iger jaren George Eliot e.a.
die betrokken waren bij het tijdschrift van Jeremy Bentham &
James Mill’s Westminster Review, zich niet alleen gingen
bezighouden met Spinoza, maar hem zelfs gingen zien als "a great
intellectual culture-hero." Het is een mooie aanvulling op

Dr. Joe Hughes is a lecturer in
the Department of English at the University of Minnesota, USA. He
received his PhD in English Literature from the University of
Edinburgh in 2007 and has published widely in the are of literary
theory since then. During his time in Scotland, Dr. Hughes was also
a visiting assistant professor at Queen Margaret's University, where
he lectured on drama and performance theory. In the past two years
conferences have brought him to Beirut, Rome, Cologne, Sydney, and
