Martineau was een Engels religieus filosoof die grote invloed heeft uitgeoefend op het Unitarisme. 45 jaar was hij professor in Mental and Moral Philosophy and Political Economy in Manchester New College, het trainingscentrum van de Britse Unitariërs.

De New York Times had er op 30 oktober 1882 in de rubriek van nieuw verschenen boeken het volgende berichtje over: “—Dr. James Martineau's "Study of Spinoza," just brought out by Macmillan & Co., was originally intended for a place in Prof. Knight's "Philosophical Classics," but so far outgrew the limits prescribed for those volumes that it had to appear on its own account. This fact, however, has contributed to the greater completeness of the book by enabIing the venerable author to add a chapter on the Biblical criticism contained in Spinoza's “Tractatus Theologico-Politicus." The work hardly conflicts with Mr. Frederick Pollock's masterly volume on the same subject, on account of the wide difference in the points of view of the two writers. Dr. Martineau gives a large space to Spinoza's philosophy, discussing it under the several heads of logical theory, metaphysical system, ethical and political doctrine, religion, and Biblical theology. The Macmillans have the volume just ready.”
